People, Places, and Quilts

129 West Richardson Avenue, Summerville, Dorchester County 29483, South Carolina

Business Details

People, Places & Quilts did not start out as a fabric store. When we opened in 1990 (Hurricane Hugo delayed plans of a 1989 opening) we sold only folk art and antique quilts and were one of several businesses in the Old Cauthen’s hardware store building in historic downtown Summerville. That lasted for three years until a friend came to me and said:

“Diane, all the fabric stores around here have closed. You’ve got to open a fabric shop. You have the space here and you like to make quilts.”

“No way. I hate fractions.”

“Look” she said getting the calculator, “If someone wants a yard of fabric at $5.50 and tax is 6%, this is all you do.”

“Looks easy. I’ll do it.”

That my friends is all true! Well, thanks to the school of hard knocks, great fabric companies and their sales reps… especially Checker Distributors & Jenny Henderson, wonderful employees & customers we are STILL here today! And, should you visit you’ll find fabric of all kinds- Australian, Oriental, 1800’s reproductions, modern & traditional designers and even…. Dr Seuss! We have books that inspire and instruct, patterns, beautiful displays, classes, sewing machines (we like Janome the best) encouragement and good times throughout this wonderful old store of 6,000 square feet! Children are welcome, dogs too and once a cat visited in a pet stroller!!

A few words about the sweet Charleston store. After 13 years we reluctantly closed several years ago. The building was to be sold and most interested people wanted long leases …I would be in my 80’s. So, we packed up and moved what was there back to Summerville. We have all the nice notes folks wrote and still have pictures on the wall of the Charleston store. Skirt magazine is located in our old space and they are good to console and send women to Summerville. The new property owner has the whole place looking great. And, we like to think we left a good feeling on that corner.

A few words about Summeville. This is a great place to visit, shop, eat, explore, stay. We have nice motels out on the interstate and modern shopping. Then as you come into the historic downtown, we have charming B&B’s, locally owned eateries, antique malls, art galleries, boutiques and the oldest drugstore in South Carolina where you can get a real lemonade made from scratch! Downtown Summerville has something for everyone.

Summerville is part of The Main Street Program which brings towns back to life. Our local organization that did this is Summerville DREAM. Go their website. SummervilleDREAM.org and also the Summerville Chamber of Commerce /Tourists Center for lots more information about our wonderful town and its people.”You don’t have to die to go to heaven. You can just visit Summerville!”

Blessings and truly…”Ya’ll stop by”.
