Charleston SC Architect Elizabeth Allen
I was born and raised in downtown Charleston among the historic buildings and rich history of this beautiful City. I knew from a very early age that Architecture was something that inspired me. When I was sixteen I was appointed the City of Charleston’s Board of Architectural Review as a liaison which allowed me to more fully appreciate the way that architecture influences all of our everyday lives. I was able to pursue my dream and attend Clemson University and study Architecture, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Design in 1996 and a Master of Architecture degree in 1998.
After graduating from Clemson I pursued a job in Key West. Florida working for Gonzalez Architects. It was an incredible opportunity for me and my young career. It was a small firm and my boss, Jose was an amazing person and allowed me, as an intern, to be heavily involved in all aspects of the firm. I was the design lead on the new Police Station for the City of Key West, a 22 unit condominium development at Oceanside Marina, renovations and redesign of the Florida Keys Turtle Hospital, historical renovation and addition to the Monroe County Courthouse and Judicial center and numerous other projects. What I did not realize at the time, was how well my experience in the southernmost historic city was setting me up for my return to Charleston.
Soon after returning to Charleston, I opened my own firm. Drawing from my Key West experience, I had an idea of what I wanted my firm to become. What I realized was that I did not only enjoy the creative process of being an Architect, but I also like seeing my ideas come to fruition and seeing how, as a building comes to life, a community changes. Now, after being in business in Charleston for over ten years and having completed over 100 projects, winning numerous awards, and making countless new friends, my goal remains the same: to continue to be a small firm and provide a very personal experience to my clients and to continue to acknowledge the important role that architecture plays in Charleston’s rapidly changing landscape.
