When children arrive at CYDC in need of a safe, stable place to call home; some are in-between foster homes, others are waiting to move to a forever home, and some will live with us until adulthood. Whatever their next step, it’s important that they are welcomed into a supportive transition home that provides educational, vocational and recreational activities, keeping them on the path to a bright future.
Children and youth live in a cottage environment that nurtures their individual needs while sharing in the responsibilities and opportunities of living in a home-like setting. There are two cottages on CYDC’s North Charleston Campus, known as Ledford and CES, and one cottage at its Moncks Corner campus known as Callen-Lacey Center for Children.
The Give Me Shelter Color 5K is for singles, couples, families, colleagues and friends. Children under the age of 5 years are free however, no race event shirt will be provided.
First established in 1790, CYDC was originally named the Charleston Orphan House, and has been named the first municipal orphanage in the United States. We are celebrating 230 years this year and looking forward to many more! We primarily work with foster children as we have four residential homes throughout our North Charleston and Moncks Corner campus. We also have developing programs in intervention and family support within our community. This race will be our 4th year and is a great time to enjoy the Lowcountry's beautiful weather and support a great cause!
