Join Kiawah River & Coastal Expeditions on an exclusive paddle and hike of the Kiawah River and surrounding area.
The adventure begins under the shaded canopy of grand oaks at the Farmhouse at Kiawah River, an island village in the Charleston countryside. After meeting and greeting, we will begin the adventure by foot, hiking the trails that line the Kiawah River to examine the flora and fauna that create this beautiful coastal ecosystem. In the late afternoon, birding should be excellent, and the guided hike will wander from maritime forest and freshwater ponds to the saltwater estuary to offer the most diversity of wildlife.
Following the hike, everyone will get fitted to kayaks and PFDs for a paddle by moonlight while the estuary settles down for the evening. As the sun turns hazy pink, ibises will head back to their roosts in large flocks, marsh hens will clatter in the tall marsh grass and solitary night herons will begin to hunt along the creek’s edge. Bottlenose dolphins may breach nearby as they slowly move through the water, giving everyone that opportunity to hear that pressure valve-like sound as they quickly take a breath. It’s an experience that everyone should have, quietly paddling under a setting sun and rising full moon.
The shimmering moonlight will illuminate a path for us down the water trails back to where our adventure began.
