CHARLESTON, S.C. (March 12, 2019) - Charleston, South Carolina has been voted No. 1 “South’s Best City” in Southern Living’s 2019 South’s Best Awards. This is the third consecutive year that Charleston has been named “South’s Best City” by the readers of Southern Living. In addition, Charleston was awarded the title No. 1 “South’s Best Food City.” A record of more than 65,000 respondents voted in the annual awards.

“We are honored to be named the “South’s Best City” for the third year in a row, as well as “South’s Best Food City” for the first year,” said Michael Tall, President & Chief Operating Officer for Charlestown Hotels, Inc. and Chair of Explore Charleston. “Charleston provides an authentic experience unlike any other destination. Walking down Meeting Street, you may just miss it. Doar Brothers is tucked into a small space but is packed with big flavors.

Owner and Chef Jonathan Doar started his culinary training right here in Charleston; across the street at the Peninsula Grill.

From there, he made stops in New York, Italy and Seattle before returning to the Holy City to create his own menu, which has been influenced by each stop of his journey.

On Saturday, March 23rd, the 4th Annual Doughnut Dash honoring TyWanza Sanders will be held in Charleston. The race starts at 9 am in the South Windermere Center in West Ashley.

The community supported, family friendly run/walk is held each year in honor of the life and legacy of TyWanza Sanders, who died in the Mother Emanuel Church shooting on June 16, 2015.

On Friday, Sean Brock’s episode of Chef's Table premiered on Netflix. Brock is the founding chef and culinary advisor at Husk in downtown Charleston. The James Beard Award-winner previously led the kitchens at Minero, McCrady’s, and McCrady’s Tavern.

Although Brock has shifted his focus to Nashville, his episode of Chef's Table will feature his work here in the Lowcountry. He is featured in the first episode of the documentary's sixth season.

Downtown Charleston has plenty of food options, but some may not know what hidden gems you can find on upper King Street.

I took a trip to Little Jack's Tavern to get a feel of the small, charming burger spot. It was recommended to me by word of mouth. The restaurant's website describes the spot as a "neighborhood restaurant and bar with all day service and timeless appeal."

Doors recently opened on a new luxury hotel on King Street. The land was originally part of the old Citadel. In the 1950s it became the Charleston County Library. Michael Bennett purchased the land with the goal of building the grand hotel that stands today.

The Royal Tern is named for a common coastal bird.

Chef David Pell comes with classical training in France and years of experience cooking for diners in the Charleston area. He and Chef Kyle Kryske are slicing and dicing some signature dishes straight from the raw bar. There are also steak, pasta and sandwich options for those who aren't into seafood.

The menu has a variety of price points. The restaurant is open from 5 pm to 10 pm and is located at 3005 Maybank Highway, Johns Island, SC.

The long-awaited Wiki Wiki Sandbar is now open at 106 East Ashley Avenue on Folly Beach.

The restaurant and bar is from Charleston restaurateur Karalee Fallert, who is also behind Taco Boy, The Park Cafe, and The Royal American, and her business partner April Bennett.

Executive Chef Jason DuPree has created a menu that offers slow-cooked meats accompanied by sides including rice, macaroni salad, greens, and starchy root vegetables.

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- For the eighth consecutive year, Charleston has been named the most popular city in the U.S., according to Condé Nast Traveler magazine. Results of the 31st annual Readers’ Choice Awards were announced today and will be celebrated in the November issue on newsstands October 16.

The Awards are widely regarded as the longest-running and one of the most prestigious recognitions of excellence in the travel industry. Nearly half a million Condé Nast Traveler readers submitted a recording-breaking number of responses evaluating their travel experiences.

Following up on their January announcement, the Charleston Library Society and The Charleston Trust U.K. last week announced details for a new collaborative literary festival taking place in Charleston, SC from November 2-5, 2017. The festival, called Charleston to Charleston, is modeled on, and formed in collaboration with, the Charleston Farmhouse in Sussex, home to the Charleston Festival, one of England’s premier literary gatherings.

Kwame Alexander, New York Times-bestselling author and 2015 Newberry Medal recipient, will be the featured speaker at this year’s Black Ink: A Charleston African American Book Festival.

Alexander will join at least 50 black authors and hundreds of readers for the second annual event on Saturday, September 23rd from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the main branch of the Charleston County Public Library. The event is free and open to the public.

Every Friday this August, the Town of Mount Pleasant will present the Waterfront Music & Movies series at Waterfront Park. The fun starts at 6:30 pm.

Each event is free to attend and includes live music and an outdoor movie with the Ravenel Bridge and Charleston Harbor as the perfect backdrops. Multiple food trucks and vendors will be onsite during each event.
