Signature Beers From Sleeveless Dave, Elevated Bar Food & Ongoing Events Always On Tap At Former Fire Station

The original Stones Throw Tavern has been a fixture off Glenn McConnell Pkwy in West Ashley for over eight years with the second location in Northwoods Mall becoming a go to destination for food & beverage lovers in the north area going on four years. Although the Charleston and North Charleston locations serve up everyday comfort food and ice cold brews, surrounded by bazillion big screens to view sports, their Goose Creek setting is somewhat unique. 

While they are still a tavern and the menu is basically the same, the Goose Creek spot bears a slightly different name, i.e. Stones Throw Brewing. Situated at 101 Button Hall Ave in a former Goose Creek city fire station, it is the only Stones Throw facility sporting its own craft brewery. 

About to celebrate their first full year in business, Stones Throw Brewing had a little help getting established with the address previously occupied for several years by Wide Awake Brewing, which closed abruptly in the fall of 2022. After making a few upgrades including equipment and decor, owner Steve Stanec threw open the doors to Goose Creek residents in February 2023.

Located on a nice stretch of property midway between Hwy 52 and St. James Ave, Stones Throw Brewing is nestled quite nicely in Goose Creek. While all three host a variety of events at their specific locations, the brewery host Gears & Beers a monthly (third Sunday) car show as well as a motorcycle club. 

Twice a month on Monday you can enjoy candle making which includes a free beer, wine or a cocktail along with all you'll need to make a candle. On specific Tuesdays take part in Pints & Poses. The Yoga Bliss class (Wednesdays) with Katie includes a craft beer of your choice with your $25 fee. The one hour session takes place in Stones Throw Brewing's event space and moves outside when warmer weather permits.

While events might be an added benefit, the main reason patrons are coming out to Stones Throw Brewing is the unique edibles and craft brews.

First off this is not your typical bar food, rather Stones Throw Brewing offers up weekend brunch and a full lunch and dinner menu that include a dozen appetizers, refreshing salads, a half dozen signature burgers, sandwiches, and preferred entrees. Basically something for everyone whether you have a hearty appetite or crave a quick bite to complement a cold brewski.

You can head to downtown Charleston, pay to park, and enjoy a high priced weekend brunch, or you can come to Stones Throw Brewing and dine on Chicken & Waffles with a side of grits or fruit for $11. Maybe the Breakfast Bowl (scrambled eggs & shredded cheese, served on top of breakfast potatoes or grits with choice of sausage, bacon, or country ham) maybe be more to your liking.

Their everyday lunch and dinner menu carries many of your pop in your mouth favorites like Pretzel Bites, Cheese Curds, Loaded Fries (melted mixed shredded cheese, bacon pieces, chives, ranch & mild sauce), and an awesome Steak Bites ( tender cut shoulder steak, grilled to order & served in Au Jus with toasted baguettes). Great with a cold beer or glass of wine. 

Their Thai Salad (also as a wrap) will excite the taste-buds, coming complete with mixed greens, teriyaki sauce, pineapple, peanuts, bell peppers, red onions, crispy noodles, & sesame ginger dressing. Vegans may opt for the Spring Salad (also wrap worthy), a colorful blend of fresh greens, baby spinach, candied walnuts, strawberries, craisins, cucumbers, & tomatoes served with an apple vinaigrette dressing. Plenty of salad options.

For the meat lover or super hungry the Stones Throw Burger (classic cheeseburger), Blue Cheese Bacon, or Patty Melt might satisfy. They offer a half dozen sandwiches including a Buffalo Chicken (on toasted potato bun), Turkey Melt, and a Classic French Dip.

Want something has carries a bit of sweet and salty than the Monte Cristo sandwich fits the bill. An ample amount of ham, turkey, swiss cheese, & American cheese layered on white bread before being batter-dipped and gently deep fried. Served at your table topped with powdered sugar, with a side of raspberry preserves for dipping. Scrumptious! Great with several craft brews or fruity wine.

Finally if you're seeking for a few meals that will stick to your ribs, Stones Throw provide five diverse entrees including a southern staple Country Fried Steak with mashed potatoes, gravy & seasonal vegetables. The 8oz Sirloin Steak topped with demi glaze, side of dark ale mustard served with mixed seasonal vegetables and a side salad will set you back a mere $18. You won't find that price at the chain steakhouses or anywhere downtown Charleston.

Enough about the everyday comfort food. The sign outside says 'brewing' which means 'Brewmaster Sleeveless Dave' is continually busy creating some of the most unique craft beers in the lowcountry, many gaining so much popularity they are on tap at other eateries around greater Charleston.

There are usually about 12 of Dave's brew concoctions on tap every given day. While Stones Throw Brewing carry several IPAs (current rage), they actually offer up a nice variety of ambers, lagers, and porters. For those who love a beer with character their Pretty Good and Peanut Butter Porter Time have a robust taste, as does the Firehouse Ale (red American ale) which pays tribute to the buildings former occupants.

IPA lovers have been captivated by a few of their signature brews including the Creek Rising Pale Ale (a nod to Goose Creek), and their Hazy Goose (celebrating New England breweries). Searching for a beer somewhere in the middle, I recommend the Easy Like Sunday Morning, a smooth drinking light American lager (4.8% ABV). Try a flight and soar to a different beer dimension. 

Like the skilled craftsman 'Sleeveless Dave' is, he's always experimenting with flavors including various barleys, malts, and hops that reflect beers from around the world including the Vienna Copper Hammer Lager and Mexican influenced Landboat Lager. His Brian Seltzer Orchestra Blackberry Hard Seltzer is equally entertaining. Thinking outside the craft brew vat is their MO (mode of operation).

Without question, Stones Throw Brewing is not your run of the mill brew house, rather they offer up a full menu, elevated bar food including sliders, flights of craft beers, as well as Saturday and Sunday brunch (10-3pm), alongside a plethora of events including the occasional Latin Dancing (Sunday social), trivia, music bingo, and yoga. Plenty of big screen TVs to enjoy the game. 

The bottom line is Stones Throw Brewing is doing all they can to appeal to a wide demographic and welcome craft beer lovers, foodies, and those who want to come out and socialize. You can even reserve their side room for your family party, company social, or any planned event.

Based on two distinct elements Stones Throw Brewing are far from pretentious. First off they are set up in a former firehouse (God bless our firefighters). Secondly they are located in Goose Creek, and there is 'nothing hoity-toity' about the Creek (just a laid back come as you are bedroom community).

On a beautiful weather day they can throw open the oversized garage doors and let mother nature further enhance your dining experience. You'll find them at 101 Button Hall Ave. in the Creek.
