McClellanville

McClellanville

Indigo, cotton and rice helped form the historic foundation of this small Charleston County town before its economy switched in very large part to fishing, shrimping and oystering. Unfortunately, Hurricane Hugo devastated its picturesque downtown in 1989. Its approximately 600 resilient residents were once again hit hard by a 2016 tropical storm/hurricane. Located 38 miles from Charleston, it is situated north of Awendaw and Mt. Pleasant and south of Georgetown, it is directly serviced by Rte. 17.
