WALKING TOURS WITH LICENSED TOUR GUIDES

Amelia “Mimi” Whaley was born in Charleston, SC and grew up on Edisto Island, one of the sea islands close to Charleston. She graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor’s degree in English. Not only qualified to read and write, Mimi really enjoys both, along with Charleston history, tour guiding, painting and traveling (whether it’s to Edisto, Santa Fe, Tuscany or Paris).

As a licensed tour guide in Charleston, Mimi is a member of the Charleston Tour Association and owner of Touring Charleston, SC, LLC. She gives walking tours and step-on guide services for both coach and smaller buses or vans. She is also a qualified garden docent, having completed the Charleston Horticultural Society’s program which focuses on Charleston horticulture, area gardens and local flora. Additionally, Mimi gives spring walking tours through Historic Charleston Foundation and works with both the Preservation Society of Charleston and the Charleston Horticultural Society for specialized private tours of homes and gardens.

Touring Charleston, SC specializes in walking tours through Charleston’s historic district. Private walking tours of the historic district are also available and if desired, can be tailored according to interest, such as “Historic and Contemporary Art in Charleston”, “The Charleston Renaissance”, “Charleston Architecture”, “Exploring the Walled City”, etc. Both Mimi and her fellow tour guide, Sallie Avice du Buisson, love to share their passion for the city with visitors and friends. Mimi and Sallie are Charleston natives with ties that go back to the early settlement. “Sallie’s family arrived at the beginning of Charles Town’s history – two of her ancestors came over on the first ship The Carolina in 1670. My ancestors came a few years later in the 1680’s and 1690’s. While it is true that Sallie’s family beat mine here, my ancestors were far more notorious. The whole reason the Whaleys are here is because one Edward Whalley, my far way-back great-grandfather, was one of the judges who voted to cut off Charles I of England’s head (the family fondly refers to him as “The Regicide”). When his son Charles II was brought out of exile in 1663 and placed on England’s throne, Edward felt it was in his best interest to get out of town. Especially with his head intact.”

Mimi writes several blogs, including “Diary of a Charleston Tour Guide” which revolves around Charleston history and offers vignettes of the city and surrounding locale. “Charleston history can be quite entertaining and sometimes surprising. After all, this is not where the Puritans landed! Charles Town was named after Charles II, known as the “Merry Monarch”, and that DNA appears ingrained in the city from its founding. Theatre, taverns, music, horse races, parties and politics – Charleston was “the place to be” in the 18th century. Fortunately, some things never change - the same is true today!
