“…piercing and intimate…this quiet play steadily deepens in complexity…by the end of Mr. Suh’s extraordinary play, we look at Afong and see whole centuries of American history” —NY Times
Directed by Rodney Lee Rogers*
In 1834, fourteen-year-old Afong Moy sailed into New York Harbor, a living cultural exchange to be put on display for a paying public who were mesmerized by her exotic ways and her tiny bound feet. Spanning over 60 years of American history, THE CHINESE LADY is a cleverly stylized portrait of the indomitable spirit of a young woman struggling to find herself in a strange new country.
