RiverDogs Food & Beverage Crew Knocking It Out of the Ballpark In 2026

More Than America's Favorite Pastime On Tap at 'the Joe', As Menu Items Pay Tribute To America's 250th Birthday

Jeff Walker, Food & Beverage Writer

The crack of the bat, the roar of the crowd overflowing into the Ashley River, and fireworks lighting up the sky on Friday nights, it's baseball time again at 'the Joe' in downtown Charleston, with your Charleston RiverDogs ready to provide the fun. Although baseball may of been derived from cricket in merry old England, the game of baseball we know and love today is one hundred percent American, so much so that since the mid 1800's it's been dubbed 'America's pastime'.

While baseball is not as old as America itself, the sport does have a long history especially in Charleston with Union soldiers from the 165th New York Infantry competing against soldiers of the 47th and 48th New York Infantries on Christmas Day 1862. Historians might recall, astonishingly that game took place during the backdrop of Civil War.

After the war between the states ended baseball exploded across America and in the Holy City. For over a century Charleston fielded teams called the Seagulls, the Palmettos, the Rebels, and the Pirates, gaining affiliations with the Chicago White Sox and the Pittsburgh Pirates during the second half of the 1900's. riverdogs logo

The RiverDogs story began in 1980 as the Royals, dubbed the Rainbows in 1985 eventually becoming the RiverDogs in 1994. Three seasons later they left College Park on Rutledge Avenue to their new and current home Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park, named for Charleston's most noted former mayor. Affectionately called 'the Joe', it is at 360 Fishburne Street along the Ashley River where America's pastime, history, patriotism, and fun explode, often before 5000 plus fans on any given night.

Long time RiverDogs fans know, as much as the game is celebrated on the field, at 'the Joe' the celebration overflows in the stands and their game day promotions. Much of the hoopla is due to the vision of former team president (now emeritus) Mike Veeck, and his 'fun is good' approach, further enhanced by RiverDogs co-owner and esteemed comic actor Bill Murray aka the 'director of fun'.

Perhaps no where more at 'the Joe' is fun embraced than with the food & beverage. While familiar ballpark standards (hotdogs, peanuts, popcorn, & cold beer) remain, each and every year the food & beverage crew under Director Josh Shea do their best to tweak the menus at varying locations along the concourse, to further enhance patrons experience while taking in a RiverDogs game.

And in 2026 in conjunction with America's 250th anniversary, Shea and his staff have bought into the full year flag waving jubilee, offering up menu items all season long celebrating the historic birth of our great nation. As the overall sentiment at 'the Joe' is 'fun is good', Shea further believes 'food is fun' and going bigger is even more fun. Just how big are we talking? You can't commemorate the country's 250th without going above and beyond. riverdogsfreedomburg 1

Do you and your two ballpark buddies have a hellacious appetite? Do you want to feed your spouse and four kids on one menu item? Make your way over to the Dog House and order the Freedom Burger. You'll need a wide angle lens to visualize this everyday comfort food. Easily feeds three super hungry types or a family of six (yes, I said six)!

We're talking seven (yes seven) juicy all beef patties layered around a soft and oversized Hawaiian bun under a bed of lettuce, tomato, pickles, and fries, complete with their signature RiverDogs sauce. Served appropriately in a pizza box. If Paul Revere attended a RiverDogs game he'd say 'give me liberty or give me a Freedom Burger'. Go team!

Another gigantic menu item that will easily satisfy the whole family or ravenous appetites is the Lowcountry Smokehouse Boil. All your southern favorites including jumbo shrimp, seasoned brisket and pulled pork piled over an ample measure of creamy mac n' cheese, all crammed into a colossal (larger than life) pretzel. The President would say this incredible edible is 'huuuge'! Just follow the aroma to the Smokehouse tucked in the corner next to the Peanut Shack directly behind home plate. riverdogs26boil

The RiverDogs aren't done with big yet. Without question the Homewrecker is an all beef frankfurter icon and a regular menu item at 'the Joe'. However, his brawnier brother aka the 'Double Barrel Hotdog' has joined the line-up this season. Think of it as the Homewrecker on steroids. Two all beef footlong Smithfield hotdogs on a bigger deli style bun loaded down with chili, cheese, pulled pork, coleslaw, pickled okra, and bacon with a slather of pimento cheese and BBQ sauce. Barney Stinson from 'How I Met Your Mother' would say it's "Legen... wait for it... dary!"

If you haven't been to a RiverDogs game in several years, aside from the play on the field, the zany promotions as well as the memorable food are well worth a night out at 'the Joe'. The food & beverage items have always been an all-star attraction.

At the State Fair you'll find ballpark staples such as Bavarian Pretzels w/ Beer Cheese, funnel fries, and a Footlong Texas Corndog. Additionally you'll find their all new Chicken & Waffles dish. Crispy morsels off chicken and potato waffle fries coated with powdered sugar and served with syrup for dipping.

Under their Stick It To Me listings maybe opt for their Buffalo Chicken Tater Kegs or the Cheesy Tater Kegs. Imagine meatball sized clumps of deep fried real mashed potatoes stuffed with either spicy chicken or cheese, and further adorned with cheddar or bleu cheese, bacon, and herbs. If you want to titillate the taste buds, this edible served on a skewer will do the trick. riverdogs26meatloaf

Seeking old school patriotism that comes on a bun, you'll find several at Dave's Diner (named for GM Dave Echols) just inside the main gate adjacent to left field, including Dave's signature Meatloaf Sandwich. This is a whole meal nicely packaged on a bun, complete with a savory slab of meatloaf swaddled in bed of real (not instant) mashed potatoes, and drenched in beef gravy. It's yum yum for the tum tum!

Want to bite into a true taste of yesteryear that reflects the south? The Riverdogs 250 Special not only pays tribute to America's birthday, but salutes a southern diner classic. Wrap your teeth and gums around a Fried Bologna Sandwich (compliments of Brasstown Beef out of NC) on a soft bun, served with an original Moon Pie (originated in Chattanooga TN), with a cold can of Cheerwine (product of Salisbury NC). Using a baseball term, it's a steal at just $12. Dave's Diner is also where you'll find an ICEE, scooped icecream, and thick milkshakes. As American as apple pie! riverdogs26bologna

Hotdogs and baseball have enjoyed a long kinship, and no where at 'the Joe' is that more celebrated than at DogWorld. Aside from specialty hotdogs, all the all beef weiners at 'the Joe' come from Kayem a hot dog connoisseur’s choice, and the official frankfurter at Fenway Park. Just saying they have a strong ballpark cred!

Aside from the Average Joe and Riverdog, fans can chow down in 2026 on a SPAM (yes SPAM) Revolution Dog. We all grew up eating SPAM aka 'Southern Preferred American Meat', one of several acronyms. Here we're talking about a grilled SPAM hotdog covered in creamy mac n' cheese, pickled jalapeno, bacon, and sriracha aioli. Apparently it doesn't have to be Friday night or July 4th for fireworks of flavor to explode in your mouth!

While there are plenty of menu items at 'the Joe' celebrating American comfort foods, if you venture over to Charlie's (RiverDogs Mascot) Passport you can enjoy a few pizzas thanks to Italian heritage and nachos compliments of Mexico, our neighbor south of the border. riverdogs26bowl

However, if you have a flair for Asian cuisine I suggest any of their three signature rice bowls that come complete with plantains (bananas starchier cousin). Their Coconut Curry Cauliflower Rice Bowl will pop in your mouth. A delightful blend of rice and beans, swirled in a mix of fresh veggies and pineapple pico, with a hint of lime, cilantro, and ginger sauce. A spicy yet pungent Asian treat, and a tad bit healthier.

For those 21 and older your favorite ice cold brews and adult beverages are always available. The New Belgian Beer Garden is where you'll find the most variety including select local and regional beers, among them Fat Tire, and the ever popular BellyItcher from Charleston's own Rusty Bull Brewing

The Beer Garden is also where you can order Porch Pounder Wine, frozen and signature cocktails as well as the red, white, & blue Patriotic Punch. Sip refreshingly.
Across the way next to Dave's Diner is Wicked Weed's Foul Pole Porch, home to their craft concoctions, and as you're making your way around first base on the concourse you'll slide into the Twisted Tea Bar. Plenty of options for adult beverages. riverdogs261drinks

Apart from the game and the shenanigans on the field, a RiverDogs game has always been a source for great ballpark food, including wild & crazy menu items that get added to the roster every season. If you're not adventurous there's plenty of locations on the concourse to grab a hotdog, burger, salty pretzel, peanuts, popcorn, and more.

Never fear, your favorite RiverDogs promotions are back. Thirsty Thursday with $1 beers presented by Budweiser is always tap. Here's a great one for the kids to commemorate America's birthday. Come out and enjoy Wiener Wednesdays, with 2 for 50¢ Hot Dogs presented by Wicked Weed and SC250. Great way to feed the little ones. MUSC Health Family Sunday continues, with fun kid-themed activities and promotions around the ballpark and the opportunity to run the bases after the game. So many reasons to come out and enjoy a night of baseball at 'the Joe'.

Familiar ballpark staples will never depart from 'the Joe'. However, the food and beverage team like to shake it up every year. During the off season Shea and his team go out in the community to see what's trending, or better yet they visit the Cisco's test kitchen in Columbia where they get to become 'mad food scientists' and let their culinary imaginations run wild.

Whether you're an avid baseball fan or just a hit or miss fan, a night out at 'the Joe' taking in a RiverDogs game is incredible fun. And remember 'fun is good'. Enjoying their food and beverage selections allows for even more fun. You can even order from your phone.
