'I Wish Someone Had Told Me...' Offers Powerful Life Lessons

Latest Book From Fox News' Dana Perino Provides Advice On Building Successful Careers & Relationships

Jeff Walker,  Entertainment Writer / Book Review

While you may not find it there, the latest book from Fox News personality Dana Perino could appropriately be placed in the 'self help' or 'self improvement' sections of your local library or local bookstore. In her new release 'I Wish Someone Had Told Me...', Perino, a New York Times best selling author offers up guidelines for building a career and enjoying a purposeful life.

Much like her Fox News Digital segment 'Short Questions with Dana Perino', she assembles sage advice from over 40 people she refers to as mentors. Among her cherished inner circle, include fellow respected Fox News colleagues, a country music superstar, close friends, and her beloved husband Peter McMahon. Those profiled in 'I Wish Someone Had Told Me...' provide meaningful insight on balancing work and social situations during different seasons of their lives. dananewbook2

Aside from affectionately describing the backgrounds of her advisers, Perino's new book opens nicely with 'Lift Off', a chapter dedicated to dreams, ambitions, and first jobs. While a few realize their calling early on, not everything we aspire too right out of the gate is what we end up doing.

Larry David drove a limo before he wrote Seinfeld and 'Curb Your Enthusiasm'. Harrison Ford began his acting career in Hollywood as a carpenter. And those who do recognize their God given talent early on, often have to face rejection and hard work to persevere in their field. Lessons learned from Nashville hit maker Dierks Bentley.

'I Wish Someone Had Told Me...' runs the gamut. Perino presents intriguing queries to her members on The Five, morning co-host Bill Hemmer, noted author Patti Callahan Henry, 'Dirty Jobs' TV host Mike Rowe, Fox Business Channel's Charles Payne, and several others from political, business, and professional backgrounds.

Together they counsel on education, communication, and participation, with all agreeing you ultimately have to love what you're doing or you'll never be happy. Quoting John Roberts 'don't let anyone tell you that you can't achieve anything you're passionate about'. How else would Jimmy Failla spin a career as a cab driver into stand up comedy, eventually hosting his own Fox News weekend show.

We all wish we had hindsight. However, finding fulfillment in our existence and understanding life's journey is usually attained through divine intervention (God) and by stories of people who have travelled down the road already.

While Perino's vision to compete as an Olympic gymnast didn't pan out, she admits in her new book, joining the speech team helped pave her way to the White House and Fox News. Of course, not everyone ends up on TV or becoming a noted author. Mike Rowe suggests the stigmas surrounding trade schools are misrepresented, and becoming an electrician is just as rewarding as becoming a banker. Find where you fit in and listen to those who've gone before you.

Whether you're a recent college graduate, a young person new in the work force, or a seasoned professional seeking a career move, we all struggle with 'what if'. Perino's new book can help alleviate some of the anxiety in the unknown, gleaning strong guidance from people who have achieved a level of admiration and contentment at home and in the workplace.

Dana Perino is a well-prepared interviewer. In 'I Wish Someone Had Told Me...' she extracts insight and illumination from the best of the best working at Fox News and Fox Business, as well as several of her closest confidantes. It is a blueprint for personal and professional success.
