Lewis Black Brings 'Goodbye Yeller Brick Road' tour to Charleston Music Hall
Veteran Standup Slays Near Sell-Out Crowd, Has Plans to Slow Down But Not Give Up Ranting!
Jeff Walker, Entertainment Writer
35 years into what became his second calling in the entertainment industry, standup comedian Lewis Black has decided to slow down his pace, but not before he brought his 'Goodbye Yeller Brick Road' finale tour (Oct 26th) to faithful followers at the Charleston Music Hall. A near sell-out crowd comprised mostly of baby boomers filled the music hall to thank the 76 year old comic, known for his political rants and disturbed social commentary.
While Black is decidedly liberal, he has no qualms about calling out stupidity from both sides. However, a good portion of his 90 minute set dealt more with the current candidate he calls the 'man in orange' and his running mate, as well as the governor of Florida, and a crazed North Carolina state representative. As he's done from day one Black touches on all the hot button topics including immigration, abortion, and asinine laws, putting his own spin on each subject.
Black it not opposed to taking potshots at whatever modern day issue gets under his skin, allowing that mis-information aka dis-information is just another form of what he calls 'lying'. His build up to that punchline received a resounding applause.
Notorious for his dark humor, Black makes no excuses for his brand of comedy. As he referenced from the start, he's not politically correct' and he's too damn old to give a flying fuck, nor does he apologize for anyone in the audience who doesn't keep up on all the bat shit crazy happening in America today.
Black's calling card has always been incessant tirades on a variety of topics including religion. Whether he struck a chord with the Jewish community when he proclaimed that Elvis Presley was the modern day 'king of the Jews', the climax to the bit was downright hilarious even if some were 'All Shook Up' (pun intended).
If you're a fan of Lewis Black than you know what to expect from the veteran comic. He may be pulling in the reins on regular standup touring, but as he told me after the show, he'll continue to do the occasional bigger one night shows, while hopefully finding time to pontificate on another book, as well as share his angst through his 'rant-cast' available through his website. https://www.lewisblack.com/pages/rantcast
