Best Restaurants to Visit on Your Field Trip to Charleston

Written by

Another school year is here, and with that, many teachers and administrators are well on their way to planning their school’s big field trips of the year. Many South Carolina schools choose to bring their students to Charleston due to its rich history, hands-on learning opportunities, and cultural landmarks. But just because you’re a parent chaperoning a school trip doesn’t mean that you can’t still enjoy Charleston’s vibrant culinary scene!

Here are some great options for satisfying your group's picky eaters (without sacrificing flavor) in Charleston:

Best For Picky Kids: Kickin’ Chicken
What to order: Pretty much every kid in history loves chicken fingers and fries, and Kickin’ Chicken serves ‘em up with lots of quality and little fanfare. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser.
Pro tip: The West Ashley location has a back room that’s great for groups, and a game room to keep kids entertained.

Lunch With A View: Fleet Landing
Downtown Charleston’s only waterfront dining option overlooks the Cooper River and gives you a great view of the USS Yorktown and the Ravenel Bridge. Popular food items include shrimp & grits, stuffed hush puppies, and fried fish.
Pro tip: Make reservations in advance in groups up to 10, because this place fills up fast!

Purely Southern: Poogan’s Porch
Poogan’s Porch has been a staple of Charleston since 1976, and for good reason. Their Southern fare is classic, simple, and delicious. Kids will love their fried green tomatoes, macaroni and cheese, and fried pimento cheese bites!
Pro tip: Poogan’s is known for being haunted, so have kids channel their inner Ghostbuster and be on the lookout for haunts during lunch!

Best for BBQ: Swig & Swine
A bit off the beaten path in West Ashley (or Summerville), the BBQ at Swig & Swine is totally worth the drive out of downtown. You can choose to eat in or order one of their tailgate packages and take it out to eat in a park!
Pro tip: If you’re eating in, ordering the family platter gets you a sample of pretty much every meat on the menu, plus 3 sides, and will easily feed a hungry group of kids.

Picnic-Style: Persimmon Café
What to order: the sandwiches are all delicious, but kids will love their design-you-own-grilled-cheese and their signature custards, especially the Nutella with freshly roasted marshmallows.
Pro tip: Order lunches in advance, pick them up and eat them picnic style in one of Charleston’s beautiful parks and gardens. We suggest Waterfront Park or White Point Gardens!

Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth: Peace Pie
Ice cream can be a messy treat for kids, but Peace Pie helps cut down on the mess by serving up delicious and creative ice cream sandwiches that both kids and adults are sure to love.
Pro Tip: With 2 locations in downtown Charleston, you can easily split your group up to avoid lines.
