Super Chix Arrives In Charleston SC

Chicken & Custard Counter Casual Eatery Now Serving Over-Sized Sandwiches & Cold Treats In West Ashley Station Near Whole Foods

Jeff Walker,  Entertainment Writer / Restaurant Review

Have you heard of Super Chix? No, it's not an all female professional wrestling tag team, nor is it a scientific experiment meant to create a new form of oversized baby chicks. Rather, Super Chix is a a rapidly expanding premium 'counter-casual' dining concept specializing in high-quality, made to order, never-frozen breaded and grilled chicken sandwiches, tenders, and hand-cut Idaho fries. superchix2

Offering freshly churned premium frozen custard in chocolate, vanilla, and a rotating 'flavor of the week', varieties, think of Super Chix as the Five Guys of poultry with a hint of Culvers for extra measure. And although they are far from the 3000 plus locations owned and operated by the Atlanta based southern chicken sandwich chain, Super Chix is giving the 'Eat Mor Chikin' guys a run for their money.

The first Super Chix opened in April of 2014 in Arlington, Texas, and in less than 12 years they have grown to 47 locations with a heavy concentration on the southeast (Carolina's, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Virginia & Tennessee) as well as stores in New Jersey, Utah, Montana, and Washington state. One of the newest locations (2025) for Super Chix is 1137 Savannah Hwy, making it four Super Chix in South Carolina alone.

With nearly a dozen everyday creations available, grilled and or breaded, Super Chix offers several signature sandwiches that appeal to a variety of tastes, including the Simple, Deluxe, Nashville Hot, Buffalo Ranch, Cheesy BBQ, and Blackened Cajun, as well as specialty options like the Super Parm, Cordon Bleu or Crispy Avocado. The sandwich names speak for themselves.

The Simple reflects a familiar southern favorite, a plump piece of white chicken under kosher pickles on a super soft and fresh bun. It will 'fila' up. The Nashville Hot is Simple's spicy cousin laced with Music City's famed hot sauce. Better have a cold drink ready when you sink your teeth and gums into this tangy mouthful. If you're a little high brow (no shame), maybe the Cordon Bleu loaded with ham, Swiss, and honey mustard is calling you. superchix6

Hard core southerners will have no problem downing the Cheesy BBQ, a plump and juicy breast of chicken layered under cheddar and two oversized crispy onion rings before being drizzled in BBQ sauce. Yum yum! Westerners on the other hand might prefer the Bacavo Ranch teeming with a moist filet topped with bacon, avocado, lettuce, and tomato, with a healthy slather of buttermilk ranch. Here's the kicker. Because Super Chix originated in Texas they are 'bigger and better' than imagined.

Salads, they got 'em! Six signature salads as a matter or fact, with every one representing different parts of the country and the world. The Southwest Salad comes overflowing with filet strips, crispy greens, sliced avocado, crispy tortilla strips, tomatoes, and blanketed under jalapeno ranch dressing.

The Buffalo Ranch salad laced with gouda, tomatoes, and creamy buttermilk ranch dressing will please northerners, with the Nashville Hot Salad appealing to those below the Bible Belt. Seeking an eclectic salad with a nutritional hint than I suggest the Asian Sesame that is chuck full of chicken, fresh greens, juicy mandarin oranges, snappy carrots, Fresno peppers, and cashews swirled in an Asian sesame dressing. Zestful!

Super Chix' fresh hand-cut fries come straight up plain, tossed in seasonings of your choice (salty, sweet, rosemary, or spicy cajun). Additionally you can order Cheesy Fries smothered in Queso Blanco (white cheese), or get them fully loaded when the add bacon and green onion for extra zing! With a heavy concentration of locations throughout the south, Super Chix keep two additional preferred southern sides on their menu. We're talking thick cut Fried Pickles and creamy house-made coleslaw. Totally awesome baby! superchixbarr 1

Want to enjoy tasty morsels of chicken without the bread (they take no offense), than order anywhere from two to six plump tenders, and pair them any of their seven (eight if you count ketchup) sauces at their unlimited in-store sauce bar! Dip your tenders buttermilk ranch, Korean BBQ, or Nashville Hot. Try them all and enjoy dipping frenzy. Super Chix also feels like home because the sauce bar corner pays tribute to Charleston. Nice!

Have a young ones in tow. Super Chix offers up three very attractive kids meals including one with a chicken slider, a two tender meal, or the always welcome grilled cheese. All come with sliced oranges or fries, choice of milk, custard or a fountain drink, with a brownie or rice crispy treat as a sweet treat. Food they love are sure to make kids happy!

Parents or just plain adults want a cool treat, Super Chix provide three ways to enjoy their signature custard concoctions. You can savor their vanilla, Dutch chocolate or flavor of the week as a single or double scoop. Want to sip your custard, than order a hand-spun shake which come in additional strawberry, cookies 'n cream, mint, & mint Oreo flavors.

Seeking a total brain freeze than I recommend a Cold Fusion, sort of a mix between the scoops and the shakes topped with your choice of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, Mint Oreos or Pretzel M&Ms. Cool and crunchy in every spoonful! You can even take home pints of your favorite custard flavors. superchix9

Plenty of sit down restaurants including KFC offer chicken sandwiches on the menu, with the Atlanta based company pretty much ruling the roost (pun intended) when it comes to a chicken sandwich. However, no one in the casual fast food industry is doing what Super Chix is doing. Simply put, they are re-inventing the 'casual fast food' model.

It's not unusual for hamburger joints (whether fast food or sports bars) to offer a half dozen versions of their all beef patty sensations on the menu. Still, nobody in food & beverage is celebrating an assortment of chicken sandwiches as much as Super Chix on a regular basis.

While most have two on the menu, and maybe a seasonal special, Super Chix easily offer ten or more unique sandwiches alongside sliders and nuggets that come with a choice of seven different dipping sauces. Like the other guys, 'they didn't invent the chicken sandwich', they've just taken poultry perfection to the next level.

It's clear Super Chix isn't going to knock the king of chicken sandwiches off the throne anytime soon, but you can damn well bet they are making their presence known inside the poultry kingdom. If you love plump and moist chicken sandwiches with a twist, incredible custard that eats like ice cream, and hand-cut fresh fries made from Idaho potatoes, then you need to put Super Chix in your casual fast food rotation list.

Rather than let the cat out of the bag, let's allow the chicken out of the hen-house, and take a quick Super Chix recap. Almost a dozen oversized all white meat chicken sandwiches, chicken tenders, and salads layered in chicken. Grabbing hold of a theme here? Super Chix are into chicken. And they are just as proud of their fries and custard creations. If it's super hot out, maybe consider popping in for a cool treat. superchix8

Proof positive. I've sampled both the Simple and the Super Parm (current winter time special), and both are freakin' amazing. Want more? The Cold Fusion is more than just and ideal blend of thick creamy custard and your favorite topping. That would be doing an injustice to the description. Rather than just a few Reese's Peanut Butter Cup or Pretzel M&M pieces strewn on top, the Cold Fusion is chuck full of chunky candy or cookie tidbits, so you can enjoy crunch with every bite.

Price points! About $20 for a sandwich, fries, and a drink. However, if you're a couple of light eaters the meal can easily satisfy two, just add another drink and the both of you eat for around $12 apiece. Kids meals are around $11 and they come with a lot of food, so you could feed two small ones off the same meal, and throw them fries off your meal, because you get a lot of fries. Just a few tips for the budget friendly.

The all new Super Chix in Charleston opened back in December at 1137 Savannah Hwy in West Ashley Station (corner of 17 & Farmfield Rd). Look for the Whole Foods Market and you'll find Super Chix just to the right. They are super clean and provide super hospitality. Order at the counter, take a seat, and they'll bring your meal to you.

I'm not sure if the founders are younger baby boomers, but there appears to be a good mix of 1970's and 80's music playing subtlety in the background. According to the general manager it's the best mix of music to dine in on. Of course you can order online and grab it to go.
