Underground Chuck's Now Open In West Ashley

New Eatery From O'Charley's Family of Restaurants Serving Up Cold Beer, Bold Flavors, & Good Vibes

Jeff Walker,  Entertainment Writer / Restaurant Review

Although their first location opened in Dayton, Ohio back in May of 2025, the second Underground Chuck's Restaurant & Bar seems more suited for the original 'Chuck-town' (pun intended) of Charleston, South Carolina. From the O'Charley's family of restaurants comes a brand new concept focusing on what is best described as a double shot of CB, serving up 'craft burgers' as well as pouring up local 'craft beers'. uc1

Of course Underground Chuck's is much more than burgers and beers. On a broader scale they are a laid back family friendly eatery offering a variety of American comfort foods including, appetizers, handhelds, flatbreads, boneless and bone-in wings, alongside several Main Events (entrees), namely a 6oz. USDA choice sirloin, grilled your way complete with two sides for $17, or what is sure to become a Charleston favorite, their ample Buffalo Chicken Mac & Cheese at just $15.

Drop in Monday through Friday anytime between 4-8pm and take part in Underground Chuck's weekday happy hour specials. Enjoy drink specials like $3 Bud Light/Miller Lite, $4 craft drafts, and $5 Chuck's Margarita, plus food deals on apps and smashburgers. A cold brew goes great with their oversized salty and chewy Bavarian Big Bar Pretzel complete with warm queso. Or maybe chow down on something you don't see much of lately, Potato Skins, layered in cheddar cheese, applewood smoked bacon, green onions, and sour cream. It comes with an extra measure of zero regrets! ucflat1

Maybe two of you are coming in and hoping for a hearty light bite, I strongly recommend the Chicken Fajita Flatbread. It's not listed under the appetizer menu, but it's a nice way to start a meal. A warm oval shaped crust topped with sliced chicken, sautéed peppers onions, and pico de gallo, as well as a medley of cheddar, mozzarella, and provolone cheeses. Served with chipotle sauce for dipping. It will truly tantalize the tastebuds. At $12 it's easily one of the best offerings for the price.

Seafood lovers have several options, including the Fish Tacos, floured tortillas laced with fried cod or their signature Wild Caught Grouper Sandwich enhanced with Old Bay seasoning and aioli. Both just $16. Feeling a bit more ravenous. The Wild Caught Grouper main event plate comes with to two crispy fried filets coated in cornmeal and your choice of two of their eight entree sides. At $25 the Wild Caught Grouper, and or their pan roasted or blackened Swordfish top the menu price at $25.

Carnivores, if you crave burgers than you are in 100% American angus beef heaven. Underground Chuck's offers up six signature burgers that will make your mouth water. Their Bodacious Burger is a sweet meat treat that packs a little heat. A full half pound burger oozing with gouda cheese and bourbon bacon sauce. Served with shoestring fries for a very reasonable price of $15.

Not surprisingly Underground Chuck's Smashburger has become their most preferred. Made just the way it should be, this juicy twin patty (half pound) delight is blanketed under American cheese and crispy dill pickles before before being further seasoned with a slather of their homemade tasty burger sauce. Incredibly filling, and steal at $14. uc8

Undoubtedly the most unique thing when it comes to Underground Chuck's bill of fare is their craft beer menu. While a majority of their adult beverage menu mirrors both locations, when it comes to craft beers, Underground Chuck's likes to reflect the community, carrying popular beers from area breweries.

Charleston locals will be delighted to know Underground Chuck's offers beers from eight very popular lowcountry breweries. Whether on draft, in cans or bottles, they pour beers from Commonhouse Aleworks, Holy City, Revelry, Snafu, Westbrook, Frothy Beard, Munkle, Edmunds Oast and a few regional beers. Diehards can enjoy a familar Bud, Miller, Michelob, and Corona products as well at Heineken and Guiness.

Cocktails, mocktails, fruit of the vine, and a variety of spirits complete the adult beverage menu. Bourbons and whiskeys have made a strong comeback in recent years with Underground Chuck's list equally alluring. The Good Stuff includes Elijah Craig and Woodhouse Reserve, with Jack Daniels, Crown Royal, Jim Beam, and Maker's Mark among the everyday brands.

If it's a preferred alcohol you can bet they pour it up. You'll find Ketel One, Grey Goose, Bacardi, and Bailey’s Irish Cream behind the bar, as well as select wines from the red, white, sparkling and rosé varieties.

If you're wondering where in greater Charleston is the all new Undergound Chuck's location, no doubt you're familiar with it or have been there in the past. Maybe you heard they recently shuttered the O'Charley's in West Ashley near Roper St. Francis hospital. Well that's the new address for Underground Chuck's Restaurant & Bar. After a facelift aka a restaurant remodel, they are now serving up affordable comfort food at 2126 Henry Tecklenburg Drive (corner of Glenn McConnell Pkwy). ucbar 1

And although they have 19 big screens situated throughout the dining room and bar area, they don't describe themselves as a sports bar, rather a gathering place for family and friends to enjoy good food and drink, while keeping up on your favorite game. Of course if it's Clemson and Carolina playing, the Superbowl, or any other championship game, they'll have the volume turned up for you. After all they are in hospitality.

Much like sporting news let's take a quick recap. Good food and drink, local craft beers, awesome burgers, four hour weekday happy hours (unheard of in the F&B industry), comfortable surroundings, and just a half mile off I-526. You can order online for curbside pickup or get food delivered. They can host your large party in the back room. While they don't take reservations you can call ahead and be placed on a list. Just get there before they call your name. uc4

Open 11am until 10pm most days, closing at midnight on Friday and Saturday. Underground Chuck's has a lot going for them.  Come in for 'cold beer, bold flavors, & good times'. For more visit https://www.undergroundchucks.com/locations and click on the Charleston tab.

Fun fact: Curious to how O'Charley's came up with the name Underground Chuck, the reason is simple. The name directly honors Charles Watkins, the founder of the first O'Charley's restaurant that opened in Nashville in 1971, with an additional nod to a former signature beer brewed by Fat Bottom Brewery out of Music City USA.
